چکیده

A belief system is an AI system which is concerned with the structural representation of beliefs, updating belief sets, reasoning with beliefs and the interaction between beliefs. A cognitive model of belief should be able to account for all of these things, and the subproblems which one encounters along the way. Several diierent approaches have been taken to solve various speciic problems for belief systems, including using logical formalisms and probabilistic models. This paper examines a relatively new approach, Explanatory Coherence (EC), as a model of belief revision. EC has many qualities which make it useful, not only as a practical implementation but as a cognitive model. An experiment using ECHO, a connectionist implementation of EC, explores the use of EC for a particular problem in belief revision, that of nonmonotonicity. Results are promising and invite further exploration into the subject and into EC as a general cognitive model of belief revision.

UEcho: A Model of Uncertainty Management in Human Abductive Reasoning

This paper explores the uncertainty aspects of human abductive reasoning. Echo, a model of abduction based on the Theory of Explanatory Coherence (Thagard, 1992a), captures many aspects of human abductive reasoning, but fails to sufficiently manage the uncertainty in abduction. In particular, Echo does not handle belief acquisition and dynamic belief revision, two essential components of human ...

Assessing Explanatory Coherence: A New Method for Integrating Verbal Data with Models of On-line Belief Revision

In an earlier study, we modeled subjects' beliefs in textually embedded propositions with ECHO, a computational system for simulating explanatory evaluations (Schank & Ranney, 1991). We both presumed and found that subjects' representations of the texts were not completely captured by the (a priori) representations generated and encoded into ECHO; extraneous knowledge likely contributed to subj...

The Functions of ‘Surah Coherence’ in Interpretation Applied to Allameh Tabatabai’s al-Mizan and Sayyid Qutb’s Fi Zilal al-Quran

‘Surah coherence’ is an important aspect of the Quranic language, which, due to its unique role in interpretation, has been highly regarded by commentators and Quranic scholars, especially over the last half a century. According to this theory, each surah is centered around a main issue in such a way that all the topics of the surah create an all-encompassing unity. The present study intends to...

Coherence and Conservatism in the Dynamics of Belief II: Iterated Belief Change without Dispositional Coherence

Part I of this paper Rott has argued that doxastic states should be repre sented as revision functions that take sequences of sentences of arbitrary nite length as arguments and return belief sets that is sets of sentences closed under some background logic Cn as a result We have interpreted the well known rationality postulates for belief change given by Alchourr on G ardenfors and Makinson an...

Intention Guided Belief Revision

This paper aims to investigate methodologies to utilize an agent’s intentions as a means to guide the revision of its beliefs. For this purpose, we develop a collection of belief revision operators that employ the effect of the revision on the agent’s intentions as the selection criteria. These operators are then assessed for rationality against the traditional AGM postulates. There is a large ...
